Being in the right place at the right time is what University of the Sunshine Coast student Josh Millican claims is the secret to him winning the University’s inaugural wildlife photography contest today.

Josh’s entry – simply named ‘Ducks, The Ponds’ – so impressed the judges in the first ‘Life’s Wild at USC Photo Competition’ that he was awarded the top prize of a complete camera kit and professional lighting equipment provided by Ted’s Cameras Maroochydore.

The photograph shows a brood of ducklings setting off with trepidation across a pond near the University’s Facilities Management buildings. Josh snapped it using a Canon 60D camera with a 55-250mm Image Stabilisation II lens with an f-stop setting of 4-5.6.

“For this photo, it was definitely all about being in the right place at the right time,” said Josh, of Rangeville, who is doing a combined degree in Arts and Science, majoring in Japanese and Biology and with a minor in Photography.

Josh is keen to use the camera equipment later this year when he spends a semester of his degree in Kyoto, Japan, as part of the University’s award-winning Study Overseas program.

The community section of the photo contest was won by Mooloolah carpenter Phil Bender, who snapped his image ‘Honeyeater bath time’ while waiting for his wife to finish a roller derby training session at USC Sports Stadium.

“It was just happening right in front of me as I walked past the ponds behind the stadium,” said the self-described obsessive birdlife photographer. “The birds would fly in, dip and fly out. So it was a matter of good timing.”

Mohammed Arfan Asif came from Bangalore to Dubai over two decades ago, with a camera, a tripod, and a desire to take his photography to the next level.
"My interest in photography had its beginnings during my school days," he says. "I was known as an artist back then, due to all my sketching and drawing and had on many occasions represented my school. But a specific photographic interest came from the magazines that were available in the school library, and later exhibitions I viewed in art galleries."
Asif settled on portraiture as his favourite photographic discipline, "and it is due to portraiture primarily that I made my mark on the international scene," he adds.
"I dabble in all kinds of subjects including nature and wildlife photography, and am particularly enamoured by landscapes at the moment."
Though landscape and nature remain his favoured subjects, he says that moving to Dubai gave him an increasing appreciation of the emirate's impressive architectural structures - and its status as a nascent city means that there is always something changing that he can document.
But Dubai gave Asif more than new subjects to shoot - it provided him with an outlet to teach and connect with the young photographers in the city.
Seeing the enthusiasm of the young creative around him, he began to gather a small group for field trips, teaching them about composition, depth of field, and the patience it takes to achieve the perfect shot - whether it be of a spiny-tailed lizard in the desert, or a curving tower in Abu Dhabi.

These pictures were taken in July 2014 on a solo hike in Hornstrandir, a very remote place in north-west Iceland. The region is famous for its arctic foxes.

Welcome to my photography website!

I have been a dedicated landscape and wildlife photographer since 2003. Usually I combine my worldwide hikes with photography, though it implies carrying a heavy 45kg backpack! My favorite hiking regions in the world are New Zealand, Scandinavia, Alaska, Patagonia and Nepal. You will usually find me on places with beautiful scenery and spectacular mountains or with interesting wildlife.

Over the years I improved my equipment and currently I use high-quality cameras and lenses from Canon, Zeiss and Sony. I prefer fixed lenses in the wide-angle segment and zoom lenses in the tele segment. Please have a look at my current camera and lens setup here: Equipment

Wildlife  photography  is  the  act  of  taking  photographs  of wildlife.  Wildlife  photography  is  one of  the  more challenging forms of  photography.  As  well  as  needing sound  technical  skills,  such as  being  able  to  expose correctly, wildlife photographers generally need good field craft  skills.

For  example,  some  animals  are  difficult  to approach and thus  knowledge of the animal's behavior is needed  in  order  to  be  able  to  predict  its  actions. Photographing some species may require stalking skills or the use of a hide/blind for concealment.
